Nine movies. The Skywalker Saga has reached its end.
This is going to be as spoiler free as I can possibly go. After my mandatory rewatch I will do a spoiler review, purely because I think the film deserves it.
In 2019 we got the end of GAME OF THRONES, the end of the Marvel ‘Infinity Saga’ in AVENGERS: ENDGAME, and the end of the 42 year long Skywalker Saga.
The thing is, I was profoundly disappointed.
The screening I went to was a Triple Bill, screening THE FORCE AWAKENS and THE LAST JEDI before the 00:01 showing of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. And because it followed those two, it just didn’t seem to add up.
It felt like a case of too many cooks, as though every single wish and hope for the sequel series had to be fulfilled. There were moments that were really good, but others that had me questioning the actual motive of J.J. Abrams and the screenwriters.
It really does pain me to say that this isn’t the masterpiece of an ending many hoped it will be. THE LAST JEDI is so much the better film, benifitting from a singular screenwriter and director that made choices in the story that took the series to a new place. THE RISE OF SKYWALKER pretty much undoes most of the good work that Rian Johnson set out with.
The score on the otherhand, is breathtaking. John Williams does not let up. If there has been one constant through the Saga it is the work of Williams. And if this is the last we will hear of Williams doing Star Wars, then he has gone out on a high note.
The cast have certainly settled into thier characters over the course of the 3 films. Special mention goes to Adam Driver, for his Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is tortured and broken, and you can actually see it in his eyes.
To say anymore would lead into Spoilers. I really do recommend you see this though. For it is the end of the Skywalker Saga, and for moments it really does pay off. There just isn’t enough of it.
