Does It Ever Rain In A Michael Bay Movie? – TRANSFORMERS (2007)

transformers-02

This series focuses on the one and only Michael Bay. Attempting to deconstruct his filmography, one film at a time. The ideas explored here may or may not end up in my Dissertation about Michael Bay and Post-Cinema.

And to answer the question: Does it ever rain in a Michael Bay movie?

After THE ISLAND, Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks set about tackling a live action adaptation of a beloved animated 80s TV series and movie. TRANSFORMERS was released in 2007, and promptly spawned 4 sequels and one spin-off (so-far).

But why is the series so derided? They made ALL the money, surely they have to be successful at something.

And to answer the question: Does it ever rain in a Michael Bay movie?

After the unhinged Bayness of BAD BOYS II, Steven Spielberg called up Michael Bay to direct a sci-fi film for Dreamworks, THE ISLAND.

What followed is Michael Bay’s first box-office failure.

Does It Ever Rain In A Michael Bay Movie? – MIDWAY (2019, Roland Emmerich)

And to answer the question: Does it ever rain in a Michael Bay movie?

“Hang on. I thought that BAD BOYS II was next, and MIDWAY isn’t even a Michael Bay film.” And you are very, very correct in that observation (pat on the back). The reason I want to discuss MIDWAY in this series, is that in my writing about ARMAGEDDON and PEARL HARBOR it dawned on me that discussing Roland Emmerich needs to happen. It can’t be ignored.

So let’s discuss MIDWAY and Roland Emmerich.

And to answer the question: Does it ever rain in a Michael Bay movie?

In 1997 the biggest film of all-time was released, James Cameron’s TITANIC. A grand epic, a love story centred around a tragedy. In 2001, Michael Bay released his grand epic, tragic love story, PEARL HARBOR.

The results were, interesting.

And to answer the question: Does it ever rain in THIS Michael Bay movie?

After the heroics of THE ROCK, Bruckheimer and Bay (sans Don Simpson who passed away) moved into the territory recently destroyed by Roland Emmerich, the Disaster Movie. In 1996, INDEPENDENCE DAY showed audiences that blowing up major landmarks, whilst nothing new, was an amazing spectacle with modern movie-making.

Michael Bay goes one bigger with ARMAGEDDON, “It’s what we call a global killer.”

Been working my way through the EXORCIST series, from the 1973 original through to the recent release of LEGION, the EXORCIST III re-edit from Shout Factory. As I got more and more into the series, I felt like I had to write something down.

This is just my thoughts on the individual films, and then the series as a whole.

Top 30 Films of 2019: 10 to 1

2019

I tried getting this down to a Top 10, then 15, then 20, and have settled on 30. There were just too many movies that I wanted to write about and highlight. There are a few ‘cheats’ where two movies are conjoined as they are thematically similar and I feel they deserve to be together.

There are a few movies I missed, so if THAT movie isn’t mentioned it’s either because I missed it, it hasn’t come out in the UK yet, or I don’t think it is good to be in the Top 30.

These are my favourite movies. Which means there are a couple of great, award-winning movies that, whilst being brilliant, aren’t a part of what I would consider my favourite.

Here you can find 30 to 21, and 20 to 11.

Bring on the Top 10.
